MAY 6 SCHOOL ELECTION RESULTS

     School mill levies were approved Tuesday for the Jefferson High School District, Clancy Elementary District and Montana City Elementary District.
     In the JHS election for a $40,000 mill levy, 520 voters cast ballots in favor and 424 voted against the measure. Prior to the election, the school board made some cuts and said more cuts, perhaps including cuts of teaching staff, would be required if the levy did not pass.     ~ Students earn recognition and scholarships at Masonic dinner ~ Jefferson High juniors Janyssa Overturf and Cory Martini each received a $1000 scholarship presented by the Masonic lodge on April 30. Eight other JHS juniors were also honored at the awards dinner.
    ~ No new trial for convicted rapist, judge rules ~  A Boulder man convicted in October of two counts of rape is not entitled to a new trial, District Court Judge Loren Tucker ruled May 1.

WARREN POLE VAULTS TO NEW MEET RECORD IN ANACONDA
     Competing against the best the region has to offer, Jefferson High track athletes placed in several events at the Top 8 meet in Great Falls this past week. Two days later, JHS senior Dani Warren set a new meet record with a pole vault of 10’ in Anaconda.
     The successes came after a season filled with weather cancellations and one week before the district tournament.

Obituaries
 
Phillip DeMers
     On April 21, 2008 at the age 80, Phillip Neil DeMers (The Red Lion) of Wickes, Montana, passed away at home with his family by his side. Red left behind his legacy of respect, hard work, and love of everyone that was fortunate enough to have known and loved him.
     His passion for life and "getting it done" was a tribute to his lifestyle, whether it was his fishing, hunting or work ethics or his family and friends. He loved what he did and did it well. His personable

JHS musicians set school record
 
Top left, members of the JHS chorus joined instrumentalists in the JHS band, top right, in earning high marks at the district music festival April 11 and 12. Members of the mixed vocal ensemble, lower left, and the percussion ensemble, lower right, will also be among the record setting number of JHS musicians competing at the Montana State Music Festival May 2 and 3.

Founded in 1907 after combining two predecessors, the Monitor has served Jefferson County for nearly a century. Current publisher, the Jefferson County Courier owned by David and Jan Anderson, bought the Monitor in March 2002.
The Jefferson County Courier
Founded in April 1997, the Courier was awarded the prestigious Thomas Dimsdale Sweepstakes Award for work published in 2000 and the National Newspaper Association Freedom of Information Award in 2004.
